NALED has initiated the project "Towards Better Food Waste Management in the Republic of Serbia" implemented within develoPPP program financed by German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development through German Development Agency (GIZ), with the aim of improving the management of this type of waste, create regulatory solutions and govern the bio-waste flows. Food leftovers may have highly adverse effects on people's health by reappearing in the food chain (e.g. animal nutrition) or by reaching landfills where they are emitting harmful gases with greenhouse effect.
Food waste that appears in each of the phases, starting from primary production all the way to final consumption in Serbia, usually ends up in municipal waste and accounts for 60% of the overall waste in landfills.
Due to the growing amounts and improper management of food waste, as well as the dangers posed to people's health, this project deals with raising awareness about this problem and the solutions in governing this type of waste.
Goals and activities
- Harmonization of policies and regulations in the field of food waste management.
- Raising awareness campaign about responsible food waste management.
- Education of the national and local inspections about handling bio-waste.
- Piloting the system for collecting food waste in public institutions and businesses on the local government level.
- Strengthening inspection oversight and advisory visits to waste generators regarding the implementation of food waste regulations.
- Inform large food waste generators about the procedures for responsible disposal, and increase their number by 50%
The goal is to deploy 1,000 tons of food waste to recycling operators.
In order to further raise awareness among citizens, NALED, together with Esotron and with the support of the German Development Cooperation conducted by GIZ, organised a workshop at the Cabinet Brewery in Kosmay, presenting the benefits of separate food collection and challenge results.
